HOMEWORK

A couple of weekends ago, after the holiday break was over and as we were getting things ready for the start of the week, my little one and I remembered about the two HUGE packets of homework he had to complete during the holiday break. "Good grief, here we go again", I thought. But before I could actually said anything, he grabbed one packet (Math first because he loves it) and asked me to lay down next to him in case he needed help. I read when he needed me to, he solved the problems, and I helped with some coloring too, because you know there's nothing funner than coloring geometric shapes and graphs! It took us over two hours to complete the Math packet, but to my surprise I enjoyed the time greatly, which made me reflect on what homework really does for me and my little one.
Today I am grateful for homework and what it does for me and my son.
Sure it's just another chore that needs to get done, but I came to dislike it very much this school year! The amount of homework he gets everyday seemed ridiculous and the agony we both go through every night trying to get it done is awful (we're both tired and would rather lay on the couch and play video games or watch Netflix honestly). That Sunday, however I realized homework is just another activity we get to do together after a long day away from each other. This is one activity where he consciously looks up to me for guidance, help, and teaching. I can whine and moan about the chore or I can choose to enjoy it while it last, because soon enough, he will grow and perhaps he'll be "too cool" to hang out and do homework on a Sunday night with mom :)
